No, it's not comparable. Two drastically different situations. And, buddy, I'm not choosing what I "want the 3x to mean." (Personally, I don't think it means anything--"three times" is a good number for building suspense. In other words, if Meadow had failed just once, it would have been no big deal; if she had failed four times, it would have been too redundant. Three times: Just right.) As for Ralph, I repeat: PLAUSIBILITY. It's one of the foundations of dramatic structure.

Although you probably don't understand Italian, doesn't it seem to you as one of those spots against AIDS etc, a message of desperation, resignation etcc? One thing I noticed while staying in the US for a while with my relatives (I'm from Italy, they're from Philadelphia) is that Italian-Americans and Americans in general tend to see the "Mafia", the "Mob" as something cool, something that you can easily put in movies or tv show to entertain people. Here in Italy, the Mafia (and especially its ties with the government) is seen as a national tragedy, almost the same way Malaria is seen in Africa.
