I'm not hip enough to even venture a guess at what the heck Knopfler is really piching here, all I know is it's really cool to see him with hair and no headband and his impeccable guitar playing is without equal on this fair planet of ours!God save Mark Kopfler, and long live Dire Straits, if only in fond memory! Thanks YT and whoever is responsible for the posting, and rock on Shindiggers!

The video is just like the song (especially the poetry and Knopflers guitar between unobtrusive kindness and passionate power) a masterly composed up and down of gambeling and fighting - really a masterpiece that is able to warm me up, still with the amazing violence like about 25 years ago when I first heard it.

It's a straight forward account of a night out. He's at the Spanish City fair ground in Whitley Bay, picks up a girl but decides not to pursue it, perhaps because both want to keep it as 'perfect strangers'.
The 'money for muscle' line is just about what you needed to find work then. Factories, shipyards, the fairground, the docks - all wanted lads with muscle.
I suppose rockaway could be a reference to the Ramones' Rockaway Beach in New York which I think has a fairground too, but I doubt it. |
