Simon and Garfunkel always take the credit for "writing" this song. It is actually an old English poem.

I was born in the late 80s and I get the movie and understand the disconnect and uncertainty. Its a great movie with a amazing sound track.

this song goes back in various forms and adaptions to nearly the middle ages i think

I suppose that's what I meant when I said its an age thing. I was 21 a few years after the film came out and I always thought I could identify with Ben - his being completely unable to connect with his parents and their values. I think 'we' (i.e those of our generation) wanted something different whereas my daughter just wants the big house car etc. and can't understand those who don't.
I went through my Mrs Robinson - and I met my Elaine (though sadly it did not last).
