This is correct. Industrial was a term that was used to describe anyone on Industrial Records, but people started using the term to describe bands similar to those on the label, and now, nobody knows what it is. Hell, today, people think that EBM and IDM are forms of industrial when they're anything but. EBM was also influenced more heavily by techno and other dancefloor genres than it was industrial. Skinny Puppy was influenced by Throbbing Gristle and have similar mindsets about music

i hate to break it to you fella but idm has in fact got absolutely sod all to do with industrial [though it now crosses over with acts like gridlock, architect, hecq, autoclav1.1 etc etc] and in fact stands for [I]ntelligent [D]ance [M]usic and was pioneered by acts in the late 80's early 90's such as autechre, boards of canada, aphex twin and squarepusher.

i personally wouldn't consider Skupp to be either EBM or IDM. I actually Think skinny Puppy is relatively similar to some of the earlier industrial bands considering what was considered industrial at the time (mid-late 80's/early 90's).

industrial did not originate in germany evildnalor, it came from the UK with bands like throbbing gristle and cabaret voltaire, but germany seemed to embrace it a lot in the 80's when bands like neubaten were created after a good deal the original industrial acts disbanded. but original industrial wasnt really limited to conventional instruments. at this point industrial is a completely different entity than what it started out as.

from what i gather... the term industrial music sprouted from industrial records. They were a label who signed primarily artists who sounded far different from others which electronic bands and such were generally different for the time period.
