Scatalogical Humor

The imagery and humor found in the Bible is often shocking and even scatalogical in nature, which leads to some odd and funny scenarios that you probably didn't learn about in Sunday School This video clip was taken from the sermon 'Humor' from Religion Saves and 9 Other Misconceptions. That Judge 3:20-22 would be considered humorous (scatalogical or not) is evidence of the relative nature of humor. Think of the kind of difference there is between the mindset of a man who has a somber and assertive outlook of that scripture, and one who find it funny. And cooking over feces is more effective because of the methane gas that it produces - again, relative humor, but not at all inherently funny.

Judges 3:22b (KJV) "...and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out." I don't think Eglan had pine mulch in those guts of his lol

The point was to get an emotive response from Israel, whether of outright disgust or of embarassed, groaning laughter. We can speak of ourselves as sinners without realising how disgusting we are to God, we can also speak of being fools for Christ (1 Cor 4:10) without really feeling foolish as Paul did. Ezekiel's dramatic prophecies were using the ridiculous to say to God's people: see yourself like THIS. Stop taking yourselves so seriously, you are foolish and disgusting, you are being warned!

Judges 3 mentions nothig about smell, intestines, or contents of intestines. E-I-S-E-G-E-S-I-S There's also a lot of fancy embellishment on the Ezekiel 4 passage. The point was to drive home Israel's sin, it was not a scatological JOKE/HUMOR!

Another scatalogical: is when Nicodemus was totally perplexed. He asked Jesus: "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" NOTE this: Nicodemus, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin, and a man of wealth asking a question as such is humorous.
