These vocals are performed with the longing and the inflection of a girl in love (in this case a Michael Stipe embodying a girl). It's almost as though the girl would perfer to be singing about the love of her life but can only substitute fleeting enjoyment of sex (your tongue all over), one night stands (room with a fire escape) and relationships that failed (box those poems).

I agree.. Monster, for me, was their peak. The ballads were top notch (Tongue, Strange Currencies) and their rockers had teeth (Bang and Blame, Crush with Eyeliner, Whats the Frequency Kenneth) Wish Bill Berry never left, they weren't the same again.
