Came out not too long after World War II. Most of the people in town just try to ignore what's going on. Seemed to be saying that sometimes you have to stand up to evil with whatever it takes.

The best part is one of the few people to stand up with him is his wife. A woman who hates violence and guns, is the one who is the best defender. Much like the movie "The Incident" only after the bad guys are defeated does the town come out.

Sorry--I should have put "not" in there between "wife" and "in". After being the only person in the town to stand with him against Miler & Co.--after every able bodied man in town turned yeller---he has a profound respect and love for her. This experience will be the cement of a firm marriage.

Incredible film. Talk about "underacting." Cooper said more with his eyes and slight changes of expression than actors such as Al Pacino who are so demonstrative. {Though I think in certain roles Pacino was spectacular.} The tension in the movie, the never ending anxiety watching it. Totally immersed and engrossed. Well directed also. The secondary actors were terrific too never overplaying their roles but always looking to understate..thus overstate. One of the very best films ever.

Look closely at the very last frames: does Cooper hand the reins to Grace Kelly, and does she drive the wagon out of town? A very early bit of feminism there--indiciating that Cooper regards his wife in the traditional way--she must love, honor, and OBEY, but as more of an equal.

The subject of Hollywood strikes was mentioned in the documentary "This Film Has Not Been Rated". Not only did the studios' union-busting ruin a number of innocent people, it also saddled us with the idiotic ratings system we have to this day. For all the talk about "liberal" Hollywood, you'd be hard pressed to find an industry as viciously anti-union or as eager to do the state's bidding as the movie business.

The real reason behind the red scare in Hollywood was because of two strikes led by unions against the studios. The studios responded by accusing not only union organizers, but anyone else with left-wing views (or believed to have left-wing views) of being communists and/or in bed with the Mafia. Of course it was almost entirely bullshit, but since when are people who use hysteria to further their agendas interested in the truth?
