I think the furry thing is probably because lots of people kept incredibly unusual pets in the 80s, as a kind of status symbol. And obviously a lot of vivisection went on in the 80s.

not true...I was born in 1985, and the only thing I did not experience was the clubbing and university aspect of young people lifestyle. All the toys, cartoons, sitcoms and general fads I was still able to experience in 1987,1988 and 1989.
